Hearing aids are FDA-regulated medical devices designed to treat hearing loss. PSAPs only amplify sound and are not intended to treat diagnosed hearing loss.
Self-referral to an audiologist is available if you are ready to pay for audiology services out of pocket. It’s similar to going to an audiology clinic on your own. There is no need to consult a doctor for a referral if you do not intend to use your insurance coverage. However, if you wish to use your insurance to consult an audiologist, a referral is necessary.
Currently, all diagnostic audiological treatments covered by Medicare need a physician recommendation. Furthermore, the primary necessity of the referral determines the objective of the examination. Each diagnostic method or therapy must be justified by a specific symptom, sign, or complaint.
