When you lose your hearing, or you notice a significant change in the quality of your hearing, it can impact on your quality of life. Sometimes, you may worry about the choices you have, or feel embarrassed – this can often mean that you avoid seeking treatment for quite some time. However, the best course of action for you, when you are experiencing hearing loss, is to see an audiologist. While there may be many options available to you, you may find hearing aids appealing. At first, you may not want to admit that you need to receive help in this way, but working with hearing aids can often improve your quality of life.

Why hearing aids?

The first question you may have could be about the treatment options available – and more specifically, why hearing aids might be the answer for you. Essentially, they will give you clearing hearing back. If you’re struggling to enjoy your life and the things you love, then speaking to an audiologist and seeing what hearing aids can do may be a smart move. Now, we’re going to look specifically at behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids, which you will likely know as the more recognizable kind.

Why BTE hearing aids?

If you’re thinking about the different hearing aids and which might be best for you, it’s a good idea to start with BTE hearing aids. Other than BTE hearing aids, there’s also in-the-ear (ITE) and in-the-canal (ITC) hearing aids. And while there are benefits to all types of hearing aids, your audiologist will work with you to determine you could benefit from BTE devices.

The benefits

While BTE hearing aids are larger than some of the other options, they are also more powerful and can be equipped with a multitude of different features.

  • In general, you will find that BTE hearing aids are widely suitable for a lot of people. They can help to aid even profound hearing loss, whereas ITE or ITC devices don’t always do this.
  • A huge selling feature is that they are a little more durable when it comes to earwax! Because the majority of the device is behind the ear and therefore away from the ear canal, there’s a lower chance of issues cropping up in comparison to ITE hearing aids.

Are BTE hearing aids right for you?

Finally, this decision will very much be up to you. While there are many benefits to the BTE hearing aids, the overall choice may be down to look or comfort – or even your level of hearing loss. Do make sure to discuss options with your audiologist to help you make the best decision.
