Can an Audiologist Treat Your Tinnitus?

Man Suffering from Tinnitus

If you are suffering from tinnitus, you might be wondering if there is anything that an audiologist can do for you. Tinnitus is a constant or intermittent ringing or sound in your ears and it can have a significant impact on your life. If you are starting to experience negative impacts on your day to day living, you should book an appointment with your audiologist to find out if there is anything that they can do to help.

Can it be treated?

Can it be treated? Yes, it can. Can it be cured? No, it can’t. Tinnitus is a complex hearing issue and because it is not known what actually causes this, it is not possible to fully cure it unless caused by a medication or earwax blockage. However, there are several methods that can be utilized to reduce your symptoms. This will involve trying different methods, including the following three most common.

Hearing aids

Most of the people who have tinnitus also experience hearing loss. As this is the case, hearing aids are often an effective method of treating this issue. What happens here is that the increased auditory signals stimulate the brain and this will mean that the tinnitus is going to be less noticeable. This is usually the first treatment that will be recommended if you are experiencing hearing loss and tinnitus.

Sound machines

Or, you might find that sound machines are suggested. Some hearing aids also act as masking devices by letting off a low-level frequency constantly in order to block the brain from recognizing the tinnitus. The whole point of these devices is to give your brain something else to concentrate on, which can lead to the tinnitus becoming less prevalent or even unnoticeable.

Hearing aids aren’t the only masking devices that you can use though. Really anything that generates white noise is going to be effective here. There are certain devices that you can buy which can either go on a tabletop or some of them can be worn around your neck. You could even use a cooling fan to generate white noise if you can’t get a masking device straight away.

Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT)

Something else that you can try is tinnitus retraining therapy. Some people have found this helpful and others have not, but it is all about what works for you. What happens in this treatment is that you will try to train your brain into thinking that the tinnitus is not there. This is a simplified explanation and what happens is that sound therapy is used to try and mask the tinnitus. Additionally, TRT focuses on the emotional response that comes with these symptoms. It is a form of habitual therapy that looks to train your brain to not hear the noise and if you do, not to respond with a negative emotion.

If you are struggling with tinnitus, we advise you to see your audiologist as soon as possible to get the treatment that you need.
