WHAT PEOPLE ARE ASKING

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When looking at the cost of hearing aids, you need to consider two things.

First, is the cost versus the care. You will find that Costco has cheaper hearing aids than private practice audiologists but you also won’t be getting the same level of care. At Cary Audiology, we take the time to really understand you and your hearing so we can provide the most effective treatment options. With your hearing health tied to your long-term brain health, you don’t want to be taking shortcuts.

Second, you should consider what is included in the price you are given. It’s commonly called “bundled” or “unbundled”. The cost of a hearing aid can include the hearing aid device itself, service plans to maintain the hearing aid, repairs, and other factors. Be sure to ask these specifics so that you get a complete picture of what the cost will include.

Self-referral to an audiologist is available if you are ready to pay for audiology services out of pocket. It’s similar to going to an audiology clinic on your own. There is no need to consult a doctor for a referral if you do not intend to use your insurance coverage. However, if you wish to use your insurance to consult an audiologist, a referral is necessary.

Currently, all diagnostic audiological treatments covered by Medicare need a physician recommendation. Furthermore, the primary necessity of the referral determines the objective of the examination. Each diagnostic method or therapy must be justified by a specific symptom, sign, or complaint.

A hearing aid specialist can assess hearing and give advice on the best hearing aid suited for a patient’s specific hearing loss. Meanwhile, a udiologists can test and diagnose a larger range of hearing and balance issues. ᅠ Audiologists are medical experts who investigate the pathophysiology of hearing loss and are in charge of determining the fundamental cause of hearing loss. Hearing aid specialists are limited to fitting and administration of hearing tests.

Hearing aid dispensers (HADs) are fully licensed professionals who analyze hearing and provide hearing aid aftercare. To employ hearing technology, hearing aid dispensers must be qualified and licensed. Audiologists can evaluate and diagnose a broader spectrum of hearing and balance issues. For medically relevant treatments such as balance difficulties, noise-induced hearing loss, and earwax impactions, an audiologist may be more beneficial. Both professionals are capable of doing hearing aid fitting, adjustments, maintenance, cleaning, and repair.
