If your audiologist determines that you might benefit from having a hearing aid fitted, you probably want to learn all there is to know about the whole process. That includes knowing about the healing aid types, what they do and how they work and what you should do to take care of them.

You might also be keen to know more about the hearing aid fitting itself, however. There are, in fact, a number of questions that you can ask if you want to learn more about your hearing aid fitting.

What type of hearing aid will I get?

First of all, you will want to make sure that you know what type of hearing aid you are going to get. The various types do differ considerably in how they are used, what they do for you and many other factors besides. You’ll want to know whether you are going to get a behind the ear (BTE), in the ear (ITE) or in the canal (ITC), and what you might need to know about the essentials of these hearing aid types.

How do I maintain my hearing aids?

The proper maintenance of hearing aids is important. If you look after them properly, you can expect them to last for a very long time in most cases, providing you with the hearing assistance you need all the way. At your hearing aid fitting, you should make sure to ask specifically about what you need to do to maintain your hearing aids properly, including what kind of cleaning process you should undergo. That will help you to increase their longevity considerably.

How do I change the settings?

Most modern hearing aids come with a range of settings, and you need to be fully aware of what these are so that you can ensure you are using your hearing aid properly. The best time to ask about all this is during the initial hearing aid fitting itself, where you can ask your audiologist what settings there are and how you can go about changing them. The more knowledge you have, the more likely it is that you will know how best to use the hearing aid to your own advantage.

How often should I wear the hearing aid?

One of the most important things you need to know is how often you should be wearing your new hearing aid. Your audiologist will probably make a point about this straight away, but in any case, it is worth asking them to be doubly sure. It might be you need to wear it all the time, or only some of the time, and in either case you need to know exactly what is best for you.
