Tinnitus Evaluations in Morrisville, NC

Cary Audiology provides tinnitus evaluations in Morrisville, NC, and nearby locations.

The Latin word “tinnere,” which means “to ring” or “a ringing,” is where the term “tinnitus” originates. Tinnitus is an infrequently detected auditory sense of noise with an internal source that is generally unpleasant. Others may find tinnitus to be so annoying that it disrupts their regular, daily activities, even if it may be moderate enough for some people to ignore. It’s important to obtain an early tinnitus evaluation to determine any underlying cause because this is usually a symptom rather than a condition.

How widespread is tinnitus?

About 15% of people globally experience tinnitus, making it a prevalent medical problem. People between the ages of 40 and 80 are frequently affected. A 2016 study found that the prevalence of chronic tinnitus rises with age, reaching a peak of 14.3% in those between the ages of 60 and 69.

Even though most of us are prone to hearing tinnitus sounds occasionally, the condition can become troublesome if the noises continue. There is no known treatment for the chronic illness known as tinnitus, but there are ways to manage it.

Is there a definitive test for tinnitus?

While there isn’t a single test that can be used to diagnose tinnitus, audiologists can perform a number of tests to do so and decide on the best course of action.

Should I see an audiologist or ENT for tinnitus?

Your best option is to see a skilled audiologist at a nearby hearing center if you have tinnitus, misophonia, hyperacusis, or other typical hearing disorders. Since audiologists are trained and knowledgeable to spot these problems, many audiologists specialize in treating these symptoms.

Tinnitus Evaluations at Cary Audiology

Since tinnitus can be experienced in many various ways, we place a high priority on controlling it in a way that is unique to the person who is experiencing it. In order to determine the severity of your tinnitus, we will take a full medical history and have you fill out a questionnaire.

We’ll perform a diagnostic hearing test, which may include measuring your otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and determining how healthy your middle ear is. Additionally, we’ll conduct tests to measure the volume and pitch of your tinnitus.

After taking the hearing test and learning the source of their tinnitus, some people feel relieved. Others find comfort through sound therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy,  and modifying their way of life. If a hearing test reveals that tinnitus can be addressed or controlled medically, a doctor’s referral is provided for further treatment consideration.

Hearing aids may be recommended as part of the intervention strategy in cases where tinnitus and hearing loss coexist in order to improve hearing while simultaneously providing some much-needed tinnitus masking.
